He states that these different types of men fought hard against death and didn't let it easily defeat them. The author mentions four different types of men: wise men, good men, wild men, and grave men. I believe that the poem is about a son encouraging and hoping his old father will fight against death. This poem reminds people of the importance of life and how we must treasure it because eventually the light will die, so we need to enjoy it while we can. Finally the last stanza is Thomas referring to his father and how he wants him to fight for survival and how he will pray to stay strong during this difficult time. In the second stanza, the poem talks about wise men holding on to life because they have not reached their goals and made an impacting difference on the world, or “their words had forked no lightning.” The poem also talks about wild men who live a dangerous life of adventure and excitement and realize too late that death is on its way. Death grows closer and closer every day with old age quickly approaching, but Thomas believes we should “rage against the dying of the light,” and “not go gentle into that good night.” The phrase “rage against the dying of the light” refers to fighting to stay alive with the word “light” referring to life the phrase “do not go gentle into the good night,” is interpreted as not accepting death quietly, and that even though it may be difficult you have to fight for survival and not leave your loved ones to live a life without you. In my opinion, this poem is about a son telling his father to fight to stay alive.
